Expectations

You were supposed to give her diamonds
Sit her atop blankets of softest sable
And call her “princess”
until she became Queen

You were supposed to closet her from lies
Expose her to truths
Encourage her to speak her mind
Until she understood the moment to hold her tongue

She expected you to love her above all
Place her needs at the top of your priority list
Remove obstacles and defend her from enemies
Until her arms were strong enough to balance the sword

Her birthdays were meant to be the highlight of your year
Accomplishments to be shouted from the roof tops
Failures soothed by your beliefs that she could do better
Until….forever

You were supposed to be father, daddy, pater
You were supposed to be unfailing love
