Wide Awake

You say “Goodnight”
and I fight demons
the hateful monster in shades of jade and emerald
conjuring pictures of a face I’ve never seen
caressed by hands that have touched my body
purposefully
Pictures of arms with definition
memorized tattoos wrapped around a waist that is not mine
torturing myself with images of butterfly kisses
trailed along the curve of a neck that doesn’t resemble my own
An unfamiliar name
tumbling from lips
wantonly painted with my flavor
You utter one word, two syllables
“Goodnight”
I fight for hours to cleanse my mind of what that means for her
here I am, truly….wide awake
